The Department of Biotechnology at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla was established in the year 1995 with financial support from the State Government and Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The major objective(s) of the Department are generation of trained manpower in Biotechnology, to undertake research and extension activities for thedevelopment of Himachal Pradesh and to promote interaction between Biotechnology based industries and the University.The Department is presently running M.Sc. (Two years), M.Phil. (One year) and Ph.D. programs in Biotechnology.

The Department admits 30 students in M.Sc. Biotechnology program every year though GAT-B Entrance Examination conducted by Reginal Centre of Biotechnology (RCB), Faridabad on behalf of DBT. The Department also offers M.Sc. Microbiology in which the students are admitted through entrance test conducted by Himachal Pradesh University. Since its inception, the Department has created a niche in academics and research at national level because of strong academic and research programs. Our students are serving in renowned institutions and industries throughout the world and some have emerged as successful entrepreneurs. The Department has received research grants from DBT, DST, UGC and Himachal Pradesh state Govt.

The Department has also been identified for financial support under emerging areas and schemes of UGC and FIST programme of DST. Presently, the Department has signed MOU with industries and institutions within India and abroad for collaboration in research. The Department is located in 4 storied Multi Faculty Phase I building and has well–equipped Independent research labs/ teaching labs, Central Instrumentation Labs with High ended equipments, Bioinformatics Centre, IT Labs and a Departmental Library with around more than 2000 books. The main thrust areas of the Department are Microbial Enzymes, Bioprocess development for synthesis of industrially important products and Medicinal plants and therapeutics.
