Yoga is a way of living that aims towards a Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body. Man is a physical, mental and spiritual being; yoga helps promote a balanced development of all the three. Other forms of physical exercises, like aerobics, assure only physical well-being. They have little to do with the development of the spiritual or astral body.
After covid-19, Yoga has become more popular globally and people have become more aware about their physical and mental health. Due to our Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi’s relentless efforts, June 21 was declared as International Yoga Day. We celebrate it every year on June 21 since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. A record 177 countries supported the resolution. Our Yoga department is also celebrating this wonderful occasion with all the efforts of our faculty and students via offline or online mode since 2015 to connect more people and make the nation healthy.
Many foreigners come to India to learn this 5000 years old ancient wisdom. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also recommended Yoga as means to improve health. Its various benefits include increased flexibility, fitness, mindfulness, and relaxation.
The campus of Himchal Pradesh University is in Summerhill region of Shimla. Summerhill with it's pleasent weather and calming mountains becomes a perfect place for Yoga and Meditation. Our department offers one diploma and one degree course in Yoga. Apart from that if students are interested in research and want to pursue further studies, department also offers M.Phil and Ph.D. For the guidance of the students, department has three well qualified and experienced teachers.
