About Sanskrit one heard the phrase “कथम अस्थि” (for Sanskrit how are you?) and “अहम गच्छामि” (I am going). In Sanskrit language it is said that “विश्‍वस्य उपलब्धासु भाषासु संस्कृत भाषा प्राचीनतमा भाषास्तिश् अर्थात विश्‍व में उपलब्ध भाषाओं में संस्कृत भाषा सबसे प्राचीन भाषा हैा Sanskrit literature is an ocean that contains many pearls of wisdom. It is the source for Vedas, Sastrams, Kavyams and is the language of gods. The sound of each of the 36 consonants and the 16 vowels of Sanskrit are fixed and precise since the very beginning. They were never changed, altered, improved or modified. All the words of the Sanskrit language always had the same pronunciation as they have today. There was no ‘sound shift,’ no change in the vowel system, and no addition was ever made in the grammar of the Sanskrit in relation to the formation of the words. Sanskrit is not the language but the basic basis of culture. Sanskrit is the language of science and this language has guided the whole world. Today there is a great need for its protection. Sanskrit is the origin of all the languages of the world, it should be preserved and promoted at the global level. Sanskrit is now spoken by less than one percent of Indians and is mostly used by Hindu priests during religious ceremonies. It's one of the official languages in only one Indian state, Uttarakhand in the north, which is dotted with historical Hindu temple towns. Sanskrit and Indian culture are intertwined as most of the indigenous knowledge is available in this language. We want an inclusive India, a secular India, an India that belongs to everybody. The reason is its absolute perfection by its own nature and formation.

In view of the above the Department of Sanskrit is committed to ensure in-depth traditional knowledge inherent in our society to be imparted among the students. The status of the department in the domain of academics and research is manifest in the promising alumni. Adorned by Padma Shri Prof. Abhiraj Rajender Kumar Mishra former faculty member of Sanskrit Department of Himachal Pradesh University, while music was composed by Prof. R.S. Shandil of Music Department has penned Himachal Pradesh University’s Kulgeet. The rich academic collection of the department is an outcome of the concerted efforts of the eminent scholars who have graced the department. If one understands the Sanskrit language, then he know the essence of Bhagavad Geeta which provides solution to each human obstacles and their complexities. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan once said that “Sanskrit has moulded the minds of our people to the extent to which they themselves are not conscious. Sanskrit literature is national in one sense, but its purpose has been universal. That was why it commanded the attention of people who were not followers of a particular culture.”
