The Himachal Pradesh University Regional Centre was started at Dharamshala in July 1992 with a purpose to extend higher education to students belonging to remote and far flung areas of the region. The districts like Kangra, Hamirpur, Mandi, Una, Chamba, Lahaul & Spiti etc. and neighboring states of Punjab and J & K reap benefits of higher education from this centre. A new sprawling campus has come up at Khaniyara, a suburb of Dharamshala in the lap of Dhauladhar ranges, at a distance of 7 Kms. from the town and about 15 Kms. from Kangra Air Port. The H.P.University Regional Centre covers various programmes of study in the Faculties of Languages, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Commerce and Business Administration and the Laws. Various academic programmes offered are at the levels of PG Diplomas, Master's level, Research Studies at the M.Phil/Ph.D. levels.

The Himachal Pradesh University Regional Centre occupies an area of 200 Kanals and has a distinctive style of architectural view. The artistically designed building houses various teaching departments and a large library. In addition, the following facilities are available at the campus:- (1) A branch of State Bank of India (2) Computer Facilities and Internet access(3) Canteen (4) Indoor Games Facility and Playground. Efforts are being made in the future to have more academic blocks, Hostel facilities and Auditorium.
