The Department of Economics which was established in the year 1971 is one of the founder Departments of this University. The vision of the Economics Department is to produce academic and professional leaders to strengthen the region and the country. Over the last fifty years, the Department has contributed a great deal to the Indian society and economy through its teaching and research. This has been achieved by developing skills and team spirit among students through regular conventional and non-conventional teaching and research modes.

Today, the department has students from all over the country as well as from abroad.  The Alumni of this Department are very well placed in Administration, Teaching, Research, Banks, Insurance and other Public Sectors Industrial and Service Organizations. Since its inception, the department started M.A. Economics programme spread over four semesters. This academic & professional program aims at imparting theoretical training in the area of Economics. Another more important aspect added to the academic legacy of the Department was starting of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme in 1971 and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Economics in 1974.

In the year 1996, the department started a full time two years Master of Arts in Business Economics (M.A.B.E.) programme spread over four semesters. The dissertation work, where each student is required to work on some contemporary research problem related to different areas of business economics, is an important part of the fourth semester of M. A. B. E. Programme. The Department also started one year Post Graduate Diploma in Population Studies (PGDPS) in 1998 which is spread over two semesters and the curriculum of this programme matches the best in the country and has also been thoroughly updated. I have no hesitation in putting it on record that since its inception, the Department of Economics has grown successfully. In view of its continuous growth, I wish this Department all the success and am sure that the Department will continue to expand its horizons in future and strengthen the academic environment to maintain its renowned identity.
