The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of the University is one of the finest and oldest in the State that has successfully been able to provide its students with a rich and varied experience of the latest from the realm of Journalism, Media and Communication. The Department is developed in the sprawling Campus of Summer Hill in Shimla amidst the best of bounties of nature, clean air, serene surroundings and tranquillity which provides an ideal atmosphere for the students to pursue their academics in a focussed way.

Our endeavour at the Department is to provide the students the best and latest in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication. We aim at making students bloom into professionals who will be primed to work in a high-pressure situations and tasks using their high Emotional Quotient and dexterity with the working of tools of mass communication. For the holistic development of students, we have a 360-degree approach towards teaching and learning. On a regular basis, Guest Lectures, Invited Talks, Workshops, Seminars, Student Tours, Yoga and wellness sessions are being organised regularly. The Department in consonance with the core vision of the University, encourages Interdisciplinary approach in learning. 

The MA Journalism & Mass Communication Programme has regularly been updated and the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication under the aegis of Himachal Pradesh University has the most modern, up-to-date learning components which are also at par with the Industry standards. The Programme is designed to impart a learning experience rather than theoretical information. The multi-pronged approach towards building up of the knowledge of the students has already demonstrated its efficacy. The Alumni of the Department have proved themselves to be the leaders in the various realms of Media and Communication Industry and Academics, occupying enviable positions in Public and Private sector Enterprises.

Our faculty comprises veteran Academicians and seasoned Journalists, experts in Film and Audio-Video Production, online and Digital Media specialists and Researchers. The Department has one of the oldest doctoral programmes in Media and Communication research in the Northern India. The Research scholars have given high priority to the doctoral programme at the department due to its rich legacy, facilities and high standards. Every year the programme is oversubscribed due to these reasons. The UGC fellows and PhD candidates follow their research dreams under the guidance of our dedicated faculty.
