The Department of Chemistry was established as full-fledged Department of Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla in the year 1970. It has grown with a list of accolades earned nationally and internationally. The Department aims at providing the best learning resources to its students and researchers in Chemical Sciences. The Department runs M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D degree programs in three core specializations: i.e. Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. Sixty four students including two SGCs (Single Girl Child) are admitted annually for the two year M.Sc programme through an entrance test conducted by the University. The Department also admits three H.P. Government sponsored school teachers in M.Sc course to improve their professional and academic standards. Academic output of the Department is commendable, as an average of 8-10 of our students qualify UGC/CSIR-NET, GATE /SLET every year. Many students opt to move out to the institutes of higher learning: viz CSIR laboratories, IIT, TIFR, DRDO and BARC. The Department has long tradition of an excellence in research in frontline areas of Chemistry which includes basic as well as applied nature, i.e. Polymer Chemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Drug Delivery, Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, Solution Chemistry and Nano-Science. The faculty have been awarded research projects by Extra-Mural Research funding agencies, CSIR, DST, Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF), UGC, DRDO, DAE and ICAR. Excellent academic and research culture of the Department have led it to get funds under DST ( FIST) and UGC (SAP). All the faculty members have collaborative research programme for interdisciplinary innovative findings with reputed scientific institutions. The alumni of the department occupy high positions in industry and academia in India and abroad.
