Dr. Prem Lata Chandra
The Department of Modern European and other Foreign Languages started in 1973 with the establishment of the University. Initially German and Russian classes were offered and due to the keen response of students French Language was also introduced in 1976. Keeping in view the rapid speed of globalization in the present scenario; communication has brought the world ever closer. Ever more urgent is the need for students to be competent in other languages.
Three levels of courses (Certificate/Diploma & Advanced Diploma) are in all the three languages with a capacity of sixty seats in each course. Certificate class focuses on pronunciation, reading, writing & comprehension and basic translation. Diploma course motivates the learners towards the awareness in the respective foreign language & its respective culture. Through songs and films the teaching-learning process is made more effective. In Advanced Diploma literature (poetry, novels, drama) as well as the language is coupled together which deepens the linguistic and translation ability of the foreign language learner. The goal of the department is to realize the target of producing students for their further absorption as teachers in schools or language institutes. Besides language acquisition this program aims to develop the inclination of the students to pursue the area of comparative literary studies. It is also expected that some of the Diploma holders to turn out to be well versed translators and shall further assist their valuable contribution to the sectors of journalism, interpretation and tour.
