Established as the 18th TRI in India, the Institute of Tribal Studies, located on HP University premises is a member of a fraternity of Institutes dedicated to showcasing tribal culture and traditions, socio economic conditions etc across India with a view to informing policy. In keeping with its mandate this Institute undertakes research and extension activities. Being located on University premises teaching is another dimension of Institute activities whereby the Institute offers a Post-Graduate Diploma in Tribal Studies. At this Institute, we also encourage inter disciplinary innovative research on themes pertaining to Tribal Himachal. This is done so as to be able to provide policy inputs. The research and extension activities undertaken bring us in direct contact with members of Himachal’s Tribal population. I take this opportunity to gratefully acknowledge their warmth and wholehearted participation in our programmes. Also, if they did not permit us access to their world much of our research would just not be possible.

At the Institute, we are highly encouraged by the special appreciation and mention made by the NAAC team that visited HP University campus at the end of last year. It is one thing to be acknowledge by well-wishers but quite another to be appreciated by ones peers. We are humbled by the accolades bestowed on us. The credit for success achieved thus far goes in great measure to all of our collaborators and also the dedicated office staff of the Institute.

This institute continues to work with a promise to serve Tribal Himachal!
