The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies was established in the year 2020 as an academic initiative of Himachal Pradesh University to promote the systematic study of national and international security issues, defence strategies, and strategic affairs. Rooted in an interdisciplinary approach, the department integrates elements of political science, international relations, military history, and strategic theory to offer a holistic understanding of contemporary security challenges. Since its inception, the department has aimed to equip students with both theoretical foundations and practical insights into defence and strategic studies.

The department offers postgraduate programmes and encourages research on a broad range of topics including:

National security and defence policy

Strategic thought and military doctrine

International relations and geopolitics

Conflict resolution and peace studies

Cybersecurity and emerging technologies in warfare

Through a combination of classroom teaching, research work, seminars, workshops, and field studies, the department prepares students for careers in academia, the armed forces, civil services, policy think tanks, and other strategic institutions.
