Established in 1986, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication is the oldest communication studies institution in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Former faculty members of the Department have included luminaries such as Prof. Vepa Rao, Prof. Vir Bala Aggarwal, Prof. (late) TDS Alok, and Prof. Santosh Kumar Tiwari. The Department organizes regular national and international events to facilitate professional and academic exposure to the students. Through close linkages with the industry personnel, both curricular and co-curricular aspects of the mass communication education and training are kept updated. Besides academics, the teaching programme in the Departments lay equal emphasis on practical learning through practice assignments, departmental productions in print and audio-video, internship training and continuous industry exposure. The students from the Department have carved out a niche for themselves in the national media industry. Our expansive alumni base helps us to keep doing better and better.

Consultancy: Before joining teaching in the Department in 2016, Dr. Shashi Kant Sharma gained an extensive experience in newspaper reporting. In a professional career spanning 25 years he has worked for important national dailies such as Nav Bharat Times and Dainik Tribune. He is currently associated with ETV Himachal as Consulting Editor. Dr. Vikas Dogra worked as a television journalist before joining teaching in the Department in 2001. Over the years he has extended professional consultancy to national and international organizations in print journalism, online content designing and graphic designing. He also has a keen interest in communication research.
Academic involvement: Apart from distinguished academics from the top journalism and mass communication institutions from the across the country, the Department engages closely with media and communication professionals in curriculum design and teaching. Through special interaction sessions with highly accomplished media professionals, our students get a holistic understanding of the journalism and communication theory and practice. Throughout the programme duration opur students engage hands-on with professional organizations as trainees. Several national and international seminars and conferences over organized by the Department over the years have seen communication academics and professionals engage closely which has helped in a well-rounded development of teaching, research and training in the Department.
Association with Alumni: The faculty in the Department maintains close ties with the alumni of the Department. Over the past 30 years, the Department alumni has excelled not only in print and television journalism organisations at national and international levels, but has also achieved great heights in the fields such as judicial and administrative services, management, etc. This association not only helps us with the industry feedback in constantly updating and upgrading our curriculum, but it also helps us in finding internship and job placements for our students.
