The department of Political Science is one of the founding departments of the University that began its journey in 1972. Politics, as we all know, is one of the most exciting and prominent stream of social sciences. It deepens the knowledge and understanding of almost all the spheres of life. And when the world has reached at our threshold, the role of political institutions, governmental bodies and global processes, which are primary in the development of society, individual rights, career making and better resource access, have become more significant.And by enrolling in the department students will have access to best of the opportunities like qualified faculty, prolific library and e-resources and material.
The mission of the department is to prepare and enlighten the students about the social challenges, emerging issues, legal and administrative questions and better governance. A well groomed student output is bound to reflect better results in society and provide more enlightened and participative citizenry conducive of effective and responsible leadership. The department has produced luminaries like former Afghanistan President Dr. Hamid Karzai, BJP national president J.P. Nadda, Dr. Dhani Ram Shandil (MP), Narinder Bragta (former Minister in HP Government), Satpal Satti (former state BJP president), Sukhwinder Singh Thakur (former state Congress President), Rakhil Kahlon (IAS), Hukam Negi (IAS), P.L. Negi (IAS) and Rajeev Sharma (IAS). The department has currently strength of six faculty members and about 135 students in the Post-Graduation, M. Phil and Ph.D. courses. Every year several students of the department qualify UGC JRF, NET, NRF and placements in different government departments of the state.
The department focuses on overall grooming of the students by giving assignments, taking presentations, holding group discussions, organising seminars and conferences and expert lectures from other universities. The celebration of Himachal Day on April 25 and United Nations Day on October 24 every year are part of important activities of the department. The syllabi for different courses have been designed to enhance understanding, inquisitiveness, and analytical thinking of students. The courses encompass a wide range of subjects like Political Theory, Approaches, Indian Political Thought, Western Political Thought, International Relations, Foreign Policy, Comparative Politics, State Government and Politics, Critical issues such as Globalization, Terrorism, Environment, Human Rights, Public Policy, International Law and many more. Studying Political Science surely enhances the mental faculty of the students to understand the social, economic and political issues and prepare them well to face them and also help them learn how to think rather than what to think.
