The Department of Economics is one of the oldest and highly reputed departments of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla. It is well recognised in the country for its Programmes, viz., Ph.D., M.Phil., M.A. Economics, M.A. Business Economics, Post Graduate Diploma in Population Studies. The department under the esteemed guidance of the Hon’ble vice-chancellor has always maintained high standards in the teaching-learning process and is committed to excellence in research activities. The department aims to enhance the intellect level of the students, enabling them to critically analyse the issues related to the global economy. Conferences, workshops, and seminars on various emerging aspects of Economics are a regular phenomenon that emphasizes research and application of theory to practice. The vision of this department is to give democratically equal opportunities to the students & scholars belonging to all the segments of society.

The department has the distinction of providing the first-ever faculty member Prof. Sikander Kumar as Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. The department constitutes well qualified and proficient faculty members, who are contributing academically by publishing research in journals of repute and other professional publications.

The department mentors its student through orientation programmes, advises on career progression and assists in placement activities. The department has the credit of having a significant number of students who cleared the JRF, NET, SELT and other various competitive exams at the state and national levels.

The department is well equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, modern methods of teaching and teaching aids to train the students in the best possible manner. To enhance the intellectual level among students, guest lectures by renowned personalities in the field of Economics are being organised on regular basis.
