For the social-economic development of society and qualitatively dignified life of the people, education is most essential. Realizing their responsibility towards the society in general and the development of the area in particular, H.P.University decided to start a regional centre at Dharamshala in the year 1992 , which is an ideal place for the establishment of such a Regional Centre to impart education at Post graduate level in different subjects of Humanities, Science and Commerce to the students hailing from the districts of Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Mandi and particularly the students belonging to far-flung and remote areas of the Chamba, Kullu and Lahaul Spiti. H. P. University, Shimla campus is at a long distance from these areas. Beside this, economic, social and geographical factors has also helped this Centre to get its existence felt and developed within little resources. The establishment of this Regional Centre at Dharamshala will, therefore, go a long way in bringing up the region in educational attainment and improving the quality of its work-force. There are several well establish colleges in the region , which will feed the Regional Centre well in promoting Postgraduate courses in important basic disciplines, as also those of vocational significance

A three year LL.B. Course was started at , H.P. University Regional Centre, Dharamshala from the Session 1999. It caters to the needs of the students of the nearby areas who had to go to far flung places to attain legal education. The LL.B course offered at H.P.U. Regional Centre, Dharamshala would go a long way in providing legal knowledge to the students, the need for which can never be over-emphasized. The same syllabus, examinations pattern is followed at School of Legal Studies, H.P.University Regional Centre , Dharamshala  as followed in the LL.B. Course at the Department of Laws, H.P. University, Shimla. Students are admitted on the basis of a law entrance test conducted by the H.P. University, Shimla. The syllabus and Course contents are revised from time to time by the Faculty of Laws of H.P. University, Shimla.

To equip the students with requisite knowledge, skills & right attitude necessary to provide effective leadership in a global environment and to develop competent management professionals with strong ethical values, capable of assuming a pivotal role in various sectors of the Indian Economy & Society, aligned with the national priorities, H.P.U. Regional Centre Dharamshala has started MBA and MCA from the session 2015 onwards. The new course M.C.A. will build right platform for students to become successful Software professional. This would emphasize on domain knowledge of various areas, which would help the students to build software applications on it. From the session 2015-16 onwards, Centre is going to start M.Phil.  Course in few subjects under the self financing mode, depending upon the availability of staff and infrastructure in the concerned subject.

H.P. University Regional Centre, Dharamshala ever since its inception in 1992 has been at forefront in undertaking education, research, consultancy, seminars, workshops and publications pertaining to different educational Programmes. The Regional Centre is dedicated through its activities to preserve and disseminate knowledge, empower itself with capacities to meet the challenges of change and to establish itself as a reputed Institution and Centre of Excellence in research by accelerating the pace of its existing activities, modifying them and also by responding to the emerging challenges of change.

Location and Campus

Initially Regional Centre was established in the premises of Government Degree College, Dharamshala in 1992 but in November, 2013 it is shifted to its own campus Mohli Khaniara at a distance of about 10 Km from Dharamshala Bus Stand, approximately 30 Km from Kangra Bus Stand and 35 Km from Palampur and is accessible through Taxis and Buses. The place is beautifully situated in the terrain of Dhauladhar range with varying flora and fauna making it an idyllic location for academic activities. The Regional Centre, Dharamshala Campus is to be fully established on a 8 Hectare  plot of land acquired by the Regional Centre at Mohli , Khaniyara . In the first phase, approximately an amount of Rs. 6 crores has been spent on the development of the Regional Centre. In future, campus will comprise Arts Blocks, Auditorium, Hostels, Health Centre and a residential complex. After Completion, it is likely to be one of the finest Campuses in the Region
