Sociology is a discipline that provides students with critical thinking skills and knowledge of society, groups, and social relationships to prepare them to be better informed individuals and to take advantage of employment opportunities where analytic knowledge of the social world is valued. The goal of Social Work is to impart scientific knowledge about the discipline, equip the young social work professionals with innovative skills, scientific aptitude and creativity. It is my pleasure to announce that the Department of Sociology and Social Work has made consistent efforts to carve a niche for itself in the world of Sociology since its establishment in the year 1989. The Department has seen expansion over a period of time as it began with MA in Sociology immediately followed by M. Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in Sociology. In 2003, the Department introduced another Post Graduate Course i.e. MA in Social Work. The disciplines run by the Department has been nurturing students by inculcating the knowledge and deep insight of others and self so that they will contribute to form a human society that respects and support human character and individuality. The sociology not only provides employment opportunities alone, but also makes the students rational, critical and logical. Since its inception, the Department has played a very significant role in promoting the research and knowledge in the area of social sciences. The Alumni of the Department are serving in different government sectors after qualifying the UPSC/HPPSC and other examinations. Many of the Social Work students are well placed in the NGO’s and corporate sector. I wish all success to the Department in its endeavors of social engineering and to train talented people to become the cornerstones of social improvement.
