Music is the language of God. Blessed are those who are endowed with talent in Music. Music education has been an integral part of Indian system of education since time immemorial. After independence, music education got ample Philip form state governments as well as private agencies. As a result, music was introduced in more and more schools, colleges and universities throughout India. But the place music deserves in academic set up, is yet to be achieved.

Himachal Pradesh University started department of Music in 1971 immediately after  its  inception. Prior to that music was taught in some colleges and one government Arts College Shimla. The government of Himachal Pradesh decoded to merge the music section of this college with the university and as a result a few music lecturers were transferred on permanent basis to the University. M.A. classes, both in vocal and instrumental music were started . Later on more lecturers and one reader (Head) were appointed to handle the workload of the department.

Welcome to the Faculty of Performing and Visual Arts. The Faculty consists of two Departments, Performing and Visual Arts.

 

We have one of the broadest portfolios in the creative arts and this brings together a diverse mix of approaches to our subject areas, including those from the creative arts and humanities, the social sciences, and science and technology

.

We promote excellence in student education and aim to provide a world-class postgraduate experience. Our Post graduates are distinctive both as creative scholars and as reflective practitioners, and many of our alumni have become leaders in their professions.

 

We have relationships with many regional and national organisations in the cultural and academic sectors, including Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi, language Art and Culture Department, Himachal Pradesh, State Museums, INTACH,IGCA, New Delhi, Doordershan, All India Radio  and all North Indian Universities.
